Acupuncture & Musculoskeletal Treatments

DI HOUSIAUX - HEALTH CONSULTANT/ REG. ACUPUNCTURIST/ NATUROPATH/ REG.NURSE

Musculoskeletal Treatment  60mins

What do you get in a Musculosketal Acupuncture Treatment?

Firstly I will carry out a postural assessment. This helps determine if skeletal structure is causing or adding to your problem.

I start your treatment by applying heat packs to the affected area. This is designed to gently loosen muscles fibers in preparation for the deep tissue massage which occurs next. Massage alerts me to any other “tight” muscles or structures that may be needing attention or may be too sore to have treatment currently. It also continues the muscle loosening that will be effective in resolving your problem.

Following from this I apply tradtional chinese medicine  (TCM) cups - or cupping for short. There are many reasons to use cupping in TCM but for musculoskeletal problems we are trying to move stagnation of blood and qi in the deep muscle, to the suface of the body where it is much easier to disperse. This is where the dark round bruising is left as a result - the darker the colour the longer the stagnation has been present. If you are about to go out and show some skin let me know before we do this.

Lastly is the acupuncture needles - more like pins. These are generally inserted into areas that are affected, working along meridians or channels where the blockages of qi and blood have occurred. Once the pins are in, its relaxation time for you to allow the acupuncture points to correct any energetic imbalances that may be contributing to your problem.

You will also be provided with a sheet recommending specific stretches that would be beneficial to you on a daily basis.

Treat yourself and your body to regular physical tunes up - don’t wait until you are injured.

Initial Consultation : Acupuncture 90mins
If you have never had an holistic treatment before, you will probably be pleasantly surprised by the experience.
In your first consultation, I would usually start by asking about your main complaint, followed by a series of questions about any other symptoms  or major illnesses that you may or may not have. This, together with my observations about your complexion, general manner and appearance, would enable me to start forming my diagnosis.

I would also take your pulses and examine your tongue. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, these are important diagnostic tools. When I take your pulses, this process is quite different from having your pulse taken in Western medicine. I will be feeling the quality of your pulses, rather than simply the speed. I will also be feeling your pulses in three different positions on each of your wrists. This will enable me to gauge how well each of your major organs are functioning, and whether there are any imbalances between them. Looking at your tongue will also give me a similar insight.

As I combine acupuncture and naturopathic principles I also check your Zinc levels, an important factor in immunity disorders, will look at your iris for constitutional strengths and weaknesses and take your vital signs (HR, B/P, Temp and Respiratory rate).

I would then put all these factors together to form my diagnosis, which I would discuss with you, also answering  any questions that you have. I like to outline a treatment plan and give you options within the treatment program ie acupuncture, herbs, dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, etc.

The acupuncture treatment requires you to lie on a massage table and have very fine needles inserted into a variety of meridian points. An acupuncture needle is about the thickness of a hair, and quite often you will not even know that I have inserted them. Usually, I would then gently stimulate the needle so that your energy is summoned to that particular point on that channel. When your energy connects with the needle, you will feel a sensation of some sort. The type and strength of the sensation varies from person to person, and also varies depending on the location on your body that I am needling in. The sensation might be a mild tingling, an aching, a feeling of heaviness, or sometimes a stronger sensation. Most people find acupuncture relaxing, and many people fall asleep during treatment.
Usually, your first consultation with me will be longer than the follow-up sessions. The first session usually lasts up to one and half hours. This extra time is to enable me to take your detailed case history and form my initial diagnosis. The follow up sessions would usually last around 45 minutes.
